I Need a Hero!
Ok, so maybe Dan and Gary were right after all.
I’ve just watched the latest episode of Heroes (sorry Liz), and I must say that was possible the best episode of the show to date. It didn’t have the wide range of characters, but it was so good. Sorry for repeating myself with how good the show is, but I cna’t really say anything else about it as it might ruin it for some of you who haven’t embraced the greatness yet.
On a side note, I was at work today when my Mac hung (no shock there). Naturally, I rebooted it. I went to load my applications up again, including Virtual PC – which for those of you who don’t know will allow me to run a PC based OS on the Mac. This wouldn’t be a problem, but since the image of the disk was mounted at the time, I get a nice little error which some readers might have seen something before:
NTLDR: Fatal Error 2592. Cannot read BOOT.INI.
I straight away hit up Google for it’s advice on this when I came across this forum thread. The majority of it is standard forum stuff. Someone has a problem – then 5-6 replies of “Yeah, We have the same problem. Don’t know how to fix it”. Except one entry. It caught my eye and if you’ll pardon my geekdom, I shall share with you.
This is posted after he had been told how to repair the problem. The user has entered the XP Repair Console and managed to get to the DOS prompt, but doesn’t know what to do now, nor does he know how to get the help up for the repair console.
“So, I figured, since the BOOT.INI file is the problem (I could not TYPE the file), I deleted it.
Now the boot up is stuck on the WinXP startup logo.
What can I do now?”
You really can’t write this stuff…
Stereo Pictures
No no, not pictures of stereos, nor those awful stereograms of the mid-late 90’s – 2 frame gifs that fool the brain in to seeing 3D images.
I was just looking around digg.com when I came across this link to a gallery of 3D images.
Definatly worth a look. My personal favourite is after the jump.

UnivRSS and DreamScene
I have just got in form work and FINALLY managed to get UnivRSS working. Turns ou that you need to open it in IE for it to install rather than running the .application itself which was downloaded from a non-sanctioned browser. Anyway, for those of you who do not know these products allow me to explain.
UnivRSS is a graphical RSS reader for Windows. It allows you to view your RSS feeds in a 3D environment. It displays each feed source as a rotating cube in the ‘galaxy’ and when you click on it, it displays a nice list through which you have the option to read the article in it’s own window or view it in IE.
I found that UnivRSS was nice, if slightly pointless if you mainly read your feeds in your browser, e-mail client or a dedicated RSS reader. Initially I found it very hard to navigate through the ‘galaxy’ as the program calls it of feed cubes, but once it was sorted and I knew what does what on controls, it all worked fine. A nice addition to Vista but seeing as I read my RSS feeds in Firefox (or via Bloglines when I’m at work) I don’t think I’ll be using it that much. The gui could also be smoother as anti-aliasing seems fairly abscent in this application which is a shame considering Vista’s shiney interface.
DreamScene is a Windows Vista Extra which allows you to have .wmv or .mpeg files playing as your backdrop on your desktop. It comes with a couple of small, low-res movies for you to sample which are quite nice to look at and that do not obstruct the viewing of folders and other files on the desktop.
Last night I found no problems with it, but after an email from Liz complaining about her TV shows going out of sync when watched on mine, I figured that having multiple movie files playing simultaneously would have a rather bad effect on each other. Nice program if you’re not doing anything processor heavy, but again – fairly pointless.
Happy Valentines Day
No, your eyes haven’t gone silly and no, I haven’t had a life changing epiphany concerning my sexuality.
Since it is the most shallow of holidays, for today I have made my blog pink and cutesy and valentine-sy. Why? Because with StyleCatcher it makes it very simple to change styles at the drop of a hat.
So for the next 24-hours (or so) you’ll have this eyesore to stare at and read.
Happy Valentines Day, Liz.
Just for the Heck of It
As I sit here before bedtime reading other peoples blogs and enjoying a bit of ‘Led before bed’ (being of the Zepplin variety) courtesy of Planet Rock I am reminded of a little blog I used to have that used to updated semi-frequently. I have been neglecting my blog for a while now. This is meainly because the only thing I’d have to blog about is work and that is a very touchy subject to blog about since it could be constrewed as lible if it isn’t in the favour of the company. As for out of work, money has been tight so nothing really there, but I’ll try my best.
As you might have read or seen, like the rest of the country we did have some snow (and no, it wasn’t acid snow being in Middlesbrough) but it didn’t really last very long. I think we had about a half inch. Nowhere near as much as other places in the country, and nowhere near enough to make a decent snowman.
I got myself a new graphics card. Twice the RAM and a whole chipset generation up from my FX5200, but for some reason Vista has given it an Index score of 2.2 which is quite strange seeing as before with my old card in, my Index score was 3.1. Very strange and something I must look in to. I’ve change the size of my AGP arpeture in the BIOS from 64MB to 128MB, but I haven’t yet redone the test to see if it has had an effect on my Index rating.
In World of Warcraft, due to lack of people online in the guild, myself and Liz have moved guilds to a MUCH bigger one. Hopefully now that will allow us to advance further in the game and run more instances. TIme will tell.
[UPDATE] I performed another Index Rating test on my system and it still came out as 2.2. This is odd, although there is a definate improvement in my games performance. On a side note, I have just downloaded and installed Windows DreamScape which allows me to play MPEG2 and WMV files as a desktop image. I dread to think what depravity is going to come from this when the 12-year old 1337h4xxorz get wind of it…
