MP3 Renaming Fun

Posted by Chris

I’ve finally got around to fixing my id3 tags for my Manic Street Preachers music (don’t worry, I own all the CD’s).

Before I had done it all by hand and it was working until I tried to automate it to try to keep on top of ones that had been badly tagged (I forget what program I used now) but it interpreted the id3 tags from the filename which was, for some reason, cut short so I only got the first few characters of the title of the track.

Enter Ubuntu and introduce Amarok, an mp3 jukebox designed for KDE. It has a feature that creates a footprint and send it off to MusicBrainz, an open source alternative to the CDDB.

What would have taken me ages to manually type out all the broken tags of the albums, took me around 20 minutes with Amarok and MusicBrainz (although I did have to download another library so that I could actually footprint the mp3s).

Xbox 360 Repair Refund

Posted by Chris

Since we have been given our notice for moving out of our current house, it occurred to me that I still hadn’t received my refund from Microsoft for the last set of repairs that my Xbox 360 went through under the new policy.

On phone to MS (again) to check the status of my 3 red lights refund in accordance with the new policy.

For a moment I thought that they were telling me that I wasn’t going to get a refund – but luckily I am after the support ‘technician’ checked with her superior.

I just asked if there was a way that I could track whether the refund cheque has been sent out yet – at the moment I am on hold again whilst she checks with the supervisor again. Apparently they are going to check the status and get back to me in 48 hours to see if they have sent the refund already.

Third Act of Vandalism

I just got back from seeing Rush Hour 3 to find out that my car has yet AGAIN been vandalised. This time someone has tried to nick my ‘Saxo’ badge from the back of the car. They didn’t get away with it, all they did was break part of it off.

Seriously getting ticked off with this. I still haven’t got around to getting the stuff for cleaning the car from last time when it was scratched.

Amusing Sort

Just before I go to the shops, I noticed this whilst looking at sort ordering in Pidgin (a multi-operator IM client). It’s the simple things in life…

Wine and Warcraft – A Winning Combination

Posted by Chris

No no, not the alcoholic beverage. WINE as in ‘Wine Is Not an Emulator’, the piece of software that allows me to play and use Windows applications in Ubuntu.

Amazingly I’m getting better performance from Linux and a not-emulator than I did running WoW natively in Vista. Also I can have it windowed without causing performance hitches or losing the effects that I have in place as I did with Aero in Vista. My Compiz Fusion runs very nicely regardless.

New WoW Expansion Video

Posted by Chris

Well here it is. The first official trailer for the new World of Warcraft expansion, ‘The Wrath of the Lich King’.

I had stopped playing the game for a few months, but today I put a month’s worth of credit in to my account – so as long as I cancel it before the end of the month I shouldn’t have to pay for another month. That is, unless I want to continue to play it…

Anyway, the reason for this post – the video.

Here is also a link to the Official Wrath of the Lich King site

Your Search Criteria Answered

Posted by Chris

After idly checking out my Google Analytics for my latest visitor statistics, I checked out what is bringing you here.

Strangely, a fair percentage are coming here searching for UnivRSS news – sadly I’ve switched to Ubuntu as my primary OS now so I’m not sure how it’s coming along. Interestingly though, if you search for UnivRSS on Google, bordagen comes up top.

Anyway, the reason for this is that I noticed the following two questions in my keywords section of GA:

  • How long did it take to get your xbox back?
  • How long did it take ubuntu to get to your house?

For the first one, it took around 7 working days I seem to remember. For the Ubuntu question, I’ve been following the distribution since I was at University, but only recently installed this current version (7.04 aka Feisty Fawn) in the last couple of months.

I hope you enjoyed this brief interlude – regularly scheduled blogging will return in due course (so probably in a few days).

…Then 2 come along at once!

I know… not a peep for weeks then all of a sudden, 2 posts in the same day.

Well I thought about leaving it until tomorrow, but things like this cannot wait.

I have been looking around the internet for traces of the Iron Man trailer that was shown at Comic-Con 2007, but no luck on that front. Everywhere seems to have had it taken down. I did however manage to find these videos for your enjoyment.

Avatar – Season 3
I have been waiting for this season for ages since I saw the last episodes of season 2, but finally (from what can be seen at the end of the trailer) season 3 is coming out in September! Sadly, this is the Comic-Con trailer, so it is on a skew and has crowd noise – still worth it though.

The Dark Knight – Trailer
A decent enough teaser trailer. At the end it has some sound of Heath Ledger as The Joker and from what I heard actually sounds pretty good.

Goldfingerrrrrrr

Whilst at work, my new boss noticed that they were showing Goldfinger at the local Cineworld, so we, along with a friend of ours went off to see it in all it’s digitally remastered glory.

I’d basically forgotten what happened in this film so it was good to see it again after all these years. Also to see it on the big screen was really good. I began wondering if they were going to do them all, but it turns out it’s a season of ‘classic films’ that have been digitally remastered and showing nationwide. The films that are showing are Goldfinger, Brief Encounter, Billy Liar, Henry V, The Wicker Man, The Dambusters and Withnail & I. I wouldn’t mind going to see The Wicker Man at the cinema, but when I saw it on telly I wasn’t that impressed by it. We shall see…
