One app to rule them all?
OK. Looking back, the majority of ‘recent’ posts on here are me vowing to use it more, usually followed by a post a month later apologising for not posting more (usually after it coming up in conversation with my dad) but today I actually have something to talk about.
As you may know, I have a Blackberry Curve 8900, on which I have applications for Twitter, Facebook and other social networking sites – but those are the 2 I use most often. Recently I received my invitation to join the SocialScope alpha. SocialScope is an all-in-one social networking tool for the Blackberry that allows you to connect to the various sites (Twitter, Facebook etc.) From one application rather than using different ones.
Whilst this does keep the quicklaunch bar of my mobile device clutter free, allowing me to have Poynt on there, it does raise an interesting question – which is better to use, one umbrella app or separate ones for each site?
With separate applications they generally have more options and ways to configure how the application works, but the downside is that you need two or more applications to access the services. One application allows you access all the services from one place, although you might not have as many options to play around with. An example of this is UberTwitter on the Blackberry, witht that it allows me to send tweets, images and links. The same is true for SocialScope, but with UberTwitter I can geotag my tweets and see other goetagged tweets on an integrated Google Map. Something that is very interesting to look at (for the last time, I’m not a stalker!). If these such or similar features make it in to SocialScope then I’ll be a happy bunny, but then again it does what it says on the tin.
