New Doctor Announced

Posted by Chris

So it has been announced that a guy called Matt Smith has been cast as the 11th Doctor in the hit show, Doctor Who.

My first reaction was ‘who?’ and the fact that he looks around 12 didn’t really help my first opinions – but then they showed some clips of him in other roles that he’s been in (Ruby in the Smoke, Party Animals) and he wasn’t too bad.

I will probably still need convincing, and he does have some big shoes to fill following David Tennent as the most recent Doctor. We’ll see what 2010 has to offer from this new guy.

Life On Mars – US Version

Posted by Chris

I’ve just seen the first trailer for the US translation of the hit BBC show, Life On Mars.

In true American style, they seem to have butchered a perfectly good show. Because it’s set in the 70’s (1972 where the UK one was in ‘73) the trailer shows 70’s style kaleidescope effects and 70’s funk music.

In fact, here is the clip for you to see yourself so you can make your own mind up about it:

Obviously, I’ll watch the first couple of episodes so I can make an informed decision on how bad it’ll be rather than just speculating about how bad it’ll be.

So you can compare, here is the intro from the UK version:

And one of my favourite bits from season 2:

The Sarah Conner Chronicles

Posted by Chris

Set in 1999, after the events of Terminator 2, Sarah and John Conner are hunted by a Terminator in New Mexico. They are also being followed by an FBI agent. Although Miles Dyson is dead (a murder that the Conners are being hunted by said FBI for), SkyNet was still built and made operational.

I’m currently around half way in to it.

Whats good so far? Summer Glau (River in Firefly/Serenity), gun play, Terminators.

Whats bad so far? Summer Glau as a Terminator, one-liners (“class dismissed”).

It’s only the pilot so I’ll let lots slide – like the fact that according to the timeline, Sarah Conner should be dead. Maybe they’re just ignoring Terminator 3…

Still it bears some resemblence to the second film, what with the monologues by Sarah Conner, the show starting with the headlights on the road. It doesn’t have the same flare as the movies, but that’s probably because it doesn’t have the same budget as the movies.
